Mini Encaustic "look"

Mini Encaustic "look"

Sunday, May 22nd Noon-3 EASTERN Time.

Wax-free encaustic- achieving the luminous look of encaustic paintings using acrylic paints and mediums.

Traditional encaustic painting involves heated beeswax mixed with varnish and pigments to make different colors. It’s complicated process and very different from painting with acrylics. Cold wax and oil is another fun but tricky technique. I love both techniques but have found I can get a very similar look using my acrylic products.

In this workshop, we’ll make 3 small abstracts that have a wonderful, dreamy encaustic look using acrylic products. I’ll demonstrate several acrylic recipes you can experiment with or modify depending on which colors and mediums you already have.

We’ll cover the differences between Gels and Mediums and talk about the best ways to use Interference and Iridescent colors

The wax-free encaustic techniques are a great way to unify the surface of your paintings or to make multiple pieces look more like “family”

Materials needed:

3 small substrates (any size, type is fine) I’ll probably use (3) 8x8 wood panels that already have some paint or gesso on them so feel free to gather up some pieces you have sitting around

Your acrylic set, brushes, water, rags, palette papers or paper plates for mixing

palette knives, a large one if you have it

collage papers

any Matte Medium or Matte Gel (I’ll be demonstrating with several types of GOLDEN Gels and Mediums)

Any Iridescent or Interference paints you already have

A piece of heavy watercolor paper for encaustic samples

Any mark making pens, pencils, markers you already have

pen and paper for notes

good lighting
